Lighting a Boutique Hotel

It must have been a good ten years ago when the owner Heleen began transforming their historic building into this best-in-class boutique hotel. Heleen had been a regular reader of our lighting update emails where we taught how to use lighting to create ambience and transform spaces.

Heleen needed lighting that would be of commercial quality with a restrained design aesthetic yet still provide the warmth and inviting atmosphere she was after. She needed a source of lighting she could trust, particularly as she wanted lights that were not necessarily made in Portugal and needed to be imported.

We were able to work with her to supply the lighting that even in a very small way, helped create the award-winning Santiago de Alfama Boutique Hotel.

At Orange Lighting, we are passionate about lighting and its ability to transform any space. We are proud to have been involved in such a prestigious project, that has grown to be one of Lisbon’s most popular hotels.

If you are want to visit Lisbon, we highly recommend you check it out!

Hotel Bedroom Lighting

Good lighting is essential for any hotel bedroom. It should be bright enough to allow guests to see clearly, but not so bright that it is harsh or glare. A room needs to functional but primarily creating an ambience suitable for the venacular of the hotel.

In a boutique hotel, this might be cosy and inviting with lots of low-level lighting to create a feeling of warmth. In a more modern setting, the use of light and dark can be used to create contrast and add interest to a space.

The key is to layer the lighting so that there are different sources of light at different levels. This can be achieved with a combination of ceiling lights, table lamps, and floor lamps.

The use of dimmer switches is also important so that the level of light can be adjusted to suit the time of day or the mood that guests are trying to create.

What Types of Bedroom Lighting Were Used?

  1. Uplighting can help to brighten the room and create a welcoming atmosphere.
  2. Wall lighting can add interest and depth to the room,
  3. Bedside reading lamps provide a more focused light for reading in bed and create an accent light over the pillow, reflecting a gentle flatering light from the fabric of the bed back into the room.

By using a combination of these different types of lighting, hotels can create bedrooms that are both functional and inviting.
