About Us

Lighting Consultants & Suppliers for Designers, Businesses & Homeowners

Andrew Orange has contributed to the design of our environment throughout the developed world, taking a particular enthusiasm for illuminating interiors. His work most notably with Kevin McCloud (Grand Designs) has defined a career which has highlighted the need for a new attitude towards lighting both in terms of its use by interior designers and in the design of the fixtures themselves. Most importantly he strongly believes that customers should demand more from their lit environments whether they be functional work places or when enjoying a meal in an ambient restaurant.

“I believe that with a little knowledge a critical public will drive the standards of interior lighting. The design community can be too wedded to convention on one hand and on the other too willing to follow a fad driven by the allure of a new material or technology”. Andrew comments.

From Andrew’s opinion, many of today’s new buildings or new spaces – do not meet the needs of the people who use them or indeed pay for them.

Before LED Lighting became the dominant source it is today, Andrew had always called for change. “We need a quiet revolution in lighting. Similar to the new heightened awareness surrounding food and eating out. The public should have an informed opinion on the way a restaurant is lit too. After all, it can make of break an enjoyable dining experience.” added Andrew in 2009.

His rallying call remains relevant. “Thankfully today the appetite for good design and well lit interiors has been widely acknowledged as beneficial for business and our health. The role of the lighting designer in our built environment has never been more relevant as LED lighting and wireless control continue to revolutionise our world”.

Originally trained and practised as an interior designer, his lighting ideas and recommendations are based upon his experience in both the specification and design & supply of light fittings. He believes the built environment at night becomes a canvass to paint with a pallet of illumination and wonderfully designed fittings, a key element in any scheme but more often an afterthought. Despite the huge potential that LED lighting has contributed, the single pendant light or the rigid row of downlighters can still be the extent of peoples lighting options – when there are a myriad of alternatives available.

Establishing Orange Lighting in 2003, Andrew has since been involved with a multitude of prestigious buildings and projects – acting as both designer and collaborative supplier with the architectural and design community mostly in the UK. The company’s work spans across high end hotels chains and hospitality, higher end residential design through to simply advising on and supplying light fixtures to the discerning individual.

Further afield Andrew designed and commissioned the lighting scheme for the Monte Carlo Nobu Sushi Restaurant, and has advised and supplied lighting to projects throughout the world.

Andrew’s successful long running lighting blog for the architect and interior designer has awarded him invitations to speak at industry events, run CPD days at the RIBA and write editorial in the design related press. His teaching is being created into a range of online lighting design courses.

Orange Lighting also provides interior and exterior lighting and designs for private homes too.

Andrew lives on the Hertfordshire / Essex borders with his wife and children.

Design For Designers

Designers generally know what they want from a lighting scheme but are not always confident about how to achieve it so we can provide a degree of design advise with the specification of our chosen product. Where budgets allow, we are a welcome member of the team to push the design to a new level and manage the procurement to ensure the outcome goes to plan. When buildings demand more complex solutions our experience can be invaluable … so we’re told!
